Combat with IRS: An Unfavorable Tactic

'Tis the season - of taxes!  Around this time of year, many taxpayers experience a trapped or frustrated feeling. In an effort to help you keep perspective, and to prevent hostile situations, take into consideration where your federal tax dollars are headed. It is important to remember that a portion of the money we send to the federal government may come back to us in some form or another.  Additionally, keep in mind that payments to the IRS are not optional, but a mandatory burden the rest of the working nation is shouldering right alongside you.

I would like to point out that combat with the IRS typically ends badly, and compliance is a favorable route. A few noteworthy examples making headlines in the recent news have been included below.

This Monday, a woman in Santa Clarita faced sentencing for unleashing her two dogs, including one pit bull, on an IRS service agent who arrived to post a summons on her property. Her husband's business was reportedly undergoing an audit at the time.

Yesterday in Wisconson a man had little success in his tax feud, after a daylong standoff with police ended.  His protest to tax money owed from back in 2001 included gunfire exchange, tear gas and a house fire, according to authorities.

This incident reminds me of the tax quotation: "In this world there is nothing that is certain except death and taxes." I suspect Benjamin Franklin never intended for this tax prose to be taken so literally.
